Student, Computer Science Major, Calculus Tutor
Gabriel Sison is pursuing his associates in Computer Science from Highline College. He plans on transferring to a 4-year where he hopefully can double major in Computer Science and Mathematics.
He currently works as a Calculus Tutor for his college. Outside of college, he volunteers for a non-profit called TakeOnCollege that helps first-generation/ low-income college students through the college application process. At the non-profit he volunteers in, he is a part of the data analytics committee, where he used survey responses and Python to calculate a 15% college acceptance improvement from students in his organization compared to the general population.
Over the Summer of 2022, he had the privilege to intern as a research participant for the University of Washington, where he was in a cohort with 30 other students to learn about the different way data science and machine learning can be applied to fluorescent brain cell images. He was taught that data science and machine learning were at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, and outside domain knowledge. It was because of this experience that sparked his interest in data science and machine learning.
As a first-generation student born in the Philippines, Gabriel understands the challenges one may face when they grow up in an environment that doesn’t foster any support or knowledge about how to succeed in America. Because of this, he is determined to not just be another statistic, and choose a path of resilience over a path of indifference.
Gabriel is open to any opportunity Computer Science and Math related! Whether it be a Hackathon, or you want to discuss a few challenging math problems with him, don’t be afraid to reach out.
